The Green River Lakes

The Green River Lakes are the northern gateway of the Wind River Range. The lakes are the source of water for the Green River which is a main tributary of the Colorado. The lakes are at an elevation of a little more than 8,000’ and are located about 50 miles north of Pinedale.

The Lower Green River Lake Loop is a 6-mile circuit around (you guessed it) the lower lake. The trailhead is located on the north side along with a campground and a beach. The loop consists of the Highline Trail, a short cut-over called the Porcupine Trail and the Lakeside Trail. I recommend taking the Highline Trail out, as the views of Squaretop Mountain and the surrounding scenery will be to your front. On the other hand, the Lakeside Trail is primarily forested with limited views. Even in a drought year, there was a lot of water run offs on this side of the lake. And of course, where there’s water, there’s mosquitos.

The trails on this loop are non-technical, with little elevation gain loss. It’s a hike everyone can enjoy.
